Abstract

This study aims to compare and analyze the development trajectories and academic research trends of virtual idols in South Korea and Japan, highlighting how each country has fostered virtual content based on its unique cultural and technological context. Both countries actively engage in content creation using motion capture, voice synthesis, and artificial intelligence (AI), while also emphasizing fan-centered interaction structures and expansion strategies through metaverse platforms. South Korea's research focuses on empirical case studies, such as PLAVE and Isangese Idol, whereas Japan's approach is more theory-driven, emphasizing concepts like “co-creation” (共成長), the 버추얼 유튜버 ecosystem, legal rights, and AI-based user-generated content. This comparative analysis provides meaningful insights for strategic planning in the global virtual content industry and offers a foundation for interdisciplinary collaborative research.
