Abstract

This article attempts to evaluate the meaning and value of the post-truth theory that emerged recently. In Post-Truth Lee McIntyre, addressing the theme of climate change, mourned the disappearance of Truth in the flood of discourse and urged a return to a society based on Truth. He advocated the legitimacy of scientific knowledge as an alternative to post-modern discourse that denies the Truth: the post-modern notion of truth lies behind giant companies' activities that employed lobbyists and sponsored researchers to conceal and dilute the Truth of climate change. What is necessary is not a discoursive demonstration but scientific evidence, not a humanist's study, but a scientist's laboratory. As such, McIntyre's Truth, heavily depending on scientific authority, undervalued philosophic discussion and the democratic value of communication. However, facts do not testify to themselves, and there is no pure proof without interpretation. Even so-called scientists' discoveries of facts are not free of interpretation, though not as much as philosophic discourses are. In this article, the author will argue that Truth is not something to be discovered but a discursive event produced in the communicative process. In other words, Truth is rhetorical rather than epistemological, and language and interested parties are inseparable from the event of truth. Truth does not exist ontically like stones or trees but ontologically like propositions, arguments, and sentences.
