2016년 이후 시대적 키워드로 급부상하고 있는 포스트 트루스는 우리가 처해 있는 시대적 조건이 무엇인가에 대한 심도 깊은 고찰을 촉구하고 있다. 필자는 이 논문에서 포스트 트루스를 음차하고자 하는데 그 이유는 post라는 접두사의 두 가지 의미 층위-‘~이후’라는 의미와 ‘탈(脫)’이라는 의미-와 truth라는 용어의 의미의 다층성-진리와 진실을 모두 가리키는 의미-를 충분히 살리기 위함이다. 나아가 필자는 포스트 트루스에 대한 통상적 개념 정의법-객관적 사실들이 여론을 형성하는 데에 있어 기분이나 감정, 개인적 믿음보다 덜 영향력 있는 상황-을 넘어서, 이를 존재론적, 인식론적, 가치론적 왜곡과 편향의 장치로 재정의하고자 한다. 왜냐하면 이것은 대안 사실의 발명을 통해 진짜와 가짜라는 가치론적 경계를 휘젓고 대안 현실의 발명을 통해 실재와 가상이라는 존재론적 경계를 허물며 정보 과잉을 통해 앎과 무지라는 인식론적 질서를 파괴하는 것으로 가치론-존재론-인식론의 굴절을 양산해내는 것이기 때문이다. 이 논문에서 필자는 첫 번째로 유발 하라리의 포스트 트루스 개념이 지나치게 확장적으로 해석되는 것에 대한 비판과 더불어 상징질서라는 언어와 기호체계를 포스트 트루스 개념으로 잘못 해석하는 개념적 부적확성을 지적할 것이다. 또한 포스트 트루스가 인류를 통합시키는 공통의 신화가 아니라, 각각의 반향실에 갇히게 만드는 분열의 축으로 기능하는가에 대해 논증할 것이다. 두 번째로 인간의 행동과 관점의 변화는 로고스라는 이성의 활용에 의해서만 가능한 것이 아니라 로고스-파토스-에토스라는 삼 요소가 적절히 배합되어야 하는 문제임을 아리스토텔레스의 수사학을 통해 논증할 것이다. 이를 통하여 포스트 트루스 사태란 분석적, 근대적 이성의 복원에 대한 담론으로는 결코 넘어설 수 없는 복합적 현상임을 드러낼 것이다. 세 번째로 포스트 트루스 현상을 신물질주의적 관점에서 접근함으로써 인간 행위자와 비인간 행위자의 어떠한 어셈블리지가 인간의 인지적 오류 경향을 강화하는지, 또 어떠한 새로운 어셈블리지가 이를 극복하게 하는가를 탐색하고자 할 것이다.
Abstract
Post-truth, which has emerged as a zeitgeist keyword since 2016, calls for an in-depth review of the conditions of the times we are in. This paper transliterates post-truth to render the dual meanings of the prefix “post,” that is, the meanings of “after” and “away from,” and highlight the multilayered meaning of the term “truth,” that is, truth and factuality. Furthermore, I want to go beyond the usual conceptual definition of post-truth, which is a situation in which mood, emotion, or personal belief has a greater influence than objective facts in forming public opinion, and redefine it as a device for ontological, epistemological, and axiological distortion and bias. This is because it conflates the axiological boundary between the real and the virtual by inventing alternative facts, breaks down the ontological boundary between the real and the virtual by inventing an alternate reality, and destroys the epistemological order of knowledge and ignorance through information overload, resulting in the refraction of axiology, ontology, and epistemology. In this paper, I first criticize Yuval Harari’s post-truth concept for being too broadly interpreted, as well as the conceptual inadequacy of misinterpreting language and the symbolic system, both of which are of the symbolic order, as a post-truth concept. I also show whether post-truth functions as an axis of division that traps humanity in echo chambers rather than a common myth that unites humankind. Second, I argue based on Aristotle’s Rhetoric that changes in human behavior and perspective can be achieved not only through the application of reason or logos, but also through an appropriate blend of the three elements of logos-pathos-ethos. Thus, the post-truth situation will be revealed to be a complex phenomenon that cannot be overcome by the discourse on the restoration of analytical and modern reason. Third, by approaching the post-truth phenomenon from a neo-materialist perspective, I intend to investigate what assemblages of human and non-human actors reinforce the tendency of human cognitive errors and which new assemblages will help overcome this.
