인성교육을 위한 음악교육의 역할

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the academic study about character education of Korea schools, to examine 2015 curriculum of music, and to provide the role of music teacher in the music activities. Character education for students has been emphasized since `5ㆍ31 Educational Reform` in 1995. Especially after 2011, the Ministry of Education began to emphasize the character education because of the violence problem in schools. The revised curriculum that supplemented character education was notified in 2012. It is not easy to understand the full shape of character education because of many different perspectives and theories about it. But we need to know that character education could be achieved not in short period, but in long time, and that educators should establish a long term plan of character education. Therefore it is necessary for music teachers to investigate the academic results of character education that were presented by scholars and specialists. The music curriculum of 2015 contains not only musical aims but also character related elements. This means that contemporary music education of Korea has given music lessons with character building elements in the classes. Then music educators need to know the academic concepts and elements of character education in order to contribute effectively through music teaching. Some educators might regard music as a means, not a goal itself, for the character education. The purpose of music teaching is musical development of students. Character education is not a core aim but an associated one of music education. Music teachers should know the relationship between musical aims and character-related elements, and apply it in their music lessons with balanced and effective ways. The more systematically music teachers understand character education, the more effectively they can handle character-related elements in the music classes.
