Abstract
This study explores how STEM undergraduates’ disciplinary characteristics, along with their personal and contextual attributes, are manifested in the process of major design, and examines the educational significance of academic advising within this context. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research involved seven students enrolled in STEM majors at University A. Multiple data sources were collected and thematically analyzed to investigate students’ backgrounds in major selection, their academic and career-related experiences after entering university, and their participation in academic advising. Findings indicate, first, that students internalized an “STEM-oriented self-image” shaped by early preferences for school subjects; however, after entering university, they experienced diminished academic motivation and career uncertainty due to the incongruity between the depth of scientific and engineering disciplines and their earlier experiences of school science. Second, department-based advising operated within research-centric and hierarchical structures, emphasizing graduate-school trajectories while providing limited access to diverse and objective career information across STEM fields. Third, academic advising functioned as an educative space that transcended departmental boundaries by supporting individualized major design and career exploration tailored to STEM learning. Advising facilitated connections between students’ disciplinary learning and their understanding of themselves as “STEM learners,” ultimately fostering autonomy and self-directed academic development. These findings underscore the need for an organically connected advising system that integrates department-based guidance with holistic academic advising capable of addressing both STEM-specific disciplinary demands and learners’ individual characteristics. The study highlights the importance of establishing robust advising infrastructures and expert networks to enhance the professionalization of academic advising in higher education.
