에라스무스의 “자유의지에 대하여”는 개신교 신학의 신학적, 윤리적문제를 제기했다. 루터는 “노예의지에 대하여”를 작성함으로 이에 대응하였다. “자유의지에 대하여”의 순서를 따라 루터는 하나하나 반박하는 방식으로 글을 작성했다. 그 과정에서 성경해석의 문제가 주로 다루어졌다. 루터는 에라스무스의 성경해석방법을 비판하고, 자신의 해석을 제시하였다. 그 결과 개신교의 성경관, 성경해석방법, 자유의지, 예정, 구원론에 대한 풍성한 신학적 진술들이 이루어졌다. 루터는 이런 방식으로 에라스무스에게 신학적 대응을 했다. 루터의 신학적 반응의 특징은 한마디로성경해석을 통한 접근이라고 할 수 있다. 에라스무스의 성경해석을 비판하고, 자신의 해석을 설득적으로 제시함으로 신학적 분석과 비판에 집중했다. 그러나 에라스무스의 윤리적 문제에 대해서 적절하게 대응하지 않았다. 루터는 신자의 삶에서 겪는 현세적 부조리와 고통에 대한 내세적, 종말론적 대응의 인식만을 보였다. 루터의 윤리적 대응은 부족했다. 결국개신교의 윤리적 이해는 루터에게서 마무리되지 않고, 발전의 여지를 남겨두었다.
Abstract
Erasmus’s “Free Will” raised the theological and ethical issues of Protestant theology. Luther responded by writing “Slavery Will”. Following the sequence of “Free Will,” The Bondage of the Will refutes Erasmus’ arguments in the same sequence he presents them. In the process, the topic of biblical interpretation was mainly dealt with. Luther criticized Erasmus’ method of interpreting the Bible and presented his own interpretation. As a result, abundant theological statements were made on the Protestant view of the Bible, methods of interpreting the Bible, free will, predestination, and soteriology. Luther responded theologically to Erasmus in this way. The characteristic of Luther’s theological response is, in a word, an approach through biblical interpretation. He focused on his theological analysis and critique by criticizing Erasmus’s interpretation of the Bible and presenting his own interpretations persuasively. However, Luther did not adequately respond to Erasmus’ ethical issues. Luther showed only the recognition of the afterlife and eschatological responses to the temporal absurdity and suffering experienced in the life of believers. Luther’s ethical response was lacking. Ultimately, the ethical understanding of Protestantism did not end with Luther, leaving room for development.
