초록

본 논문은 루터의 예정론을 그의 문헌들에 근거하여 살펴보고 그 입장의 연대기적 흐름을 탐구한다. 많은 학자들이 예정론을 근거로 개혁파와 루터파를 구분하는 경우도 있고 루터와 칼빈 사이에 신학의 결정적인 차이로 부각시켜 이해한다. 어떤 학자들은 루터의 예정론이 칼빈의 것보다 더 강하다고 주장한다. 또 다른 학자들은 루터의 예정론이 구원보다 오히려 신적인 주권과 보다 강하게 결부되어 있다고 주장한다. 루터의 예정론에 대한 기존의 학문연구 일반을 살펴보면, 대체로 루터가 가진 특정한 시기의 입장을 그의 신학 전반에 걸친 보편적인 입장인 것처럼 과장하는 경향을 보인다. 그리고 때로는 문헌적인 근거가 분명히 있는데도 간과하는 경향도 보인다. 이것은 모두 루터의 일차적인 문헌에서 발굴한 객관적인 증거의 빈곤에서 비롯된 결과라고 생각된다. 본 논문은 루터의 신학적인 활동 초기부터 말기까지 저술된 문헌들을 두루 살피며 예정에 관한 루터의 관심사는 초기부터 말기까지 언제나 뚜렷했고 이중적인 예정론의 입장도 초기부터 말기까지 고수했고 그럼에도 불구하고 예정에 대한 인간의 과도한 호기심을 극도로 경계하며 성경의 경계선을 넘어가지 말 것을 엄중히 경고하고 있음을 주장한다. 루터가 비록 예정에 대한 관심은 가졌지만 독립된 단행복 혹은 논제로서 다루지 않았다는 것은 분명한 사실이다.

Abstract

This paper examines the chronological transition in Luther’s thought of predestination. Some scholars ground the crucial difference between Calvin and Luther, or between the Calvinists and the Lutherans, in their thoughts of predestination. Some argue that Luther’s doctrine of predestination is even stronger than that of Calvin. Some regard Luther’s thought of predestination as more strongly connected with divine sovereignty than with salvation. Previous scholarship on Luther’s thought of predestination quite overstate Luther’s partial stance of the issue, which is seldom evidenced in his works, as generally supported by them, ignoring some pivotal works of them that clearly show his thought of predestination. This problem may be caused by the insufficient discovery of documentary evidences spread throughout his works. With an abundant supply of documentary evidences, this paper argue that Luther concerned predestination during the whole period of theological activity, that he held fast the double predestination in his whole theological life, and still that he sternly warmed the excessive curiosity of predestination not to go beyond the literal boundary of Scripture. It is also true that Luther did not deal with the doctrine of predestination as a monolith or an independent locus.
