Abstract
“Are we free?” This question was for a long time one of the most controversial theme in the history of theology and philosophy. The philosophical dispute about human freedom was once again brought about in last century through development of neuroscience and brain science which unveiled the biochemical mechanism of human conscious, volitional decisions and actions. In this paper, it is pursued to expose how weak is the concept of freedom which underlies not only in the philosophical dispute about libertarianism and determinism but also in the naturalistic reductionist interpretation of neuroscientific discoveries. Seemingly, the reductionistic interpretation of brain science is based on the materialistic monism, but is in reality still clinging to the Cartesian mind-body-dualism on which the human freedom cannot help but to be denied. By analysing the concept of freedom Augustine’s, the originator of theological concept of freedom, this paper aims to show the proper concept of freedom. Freedom is not to be understood in terms of self-determination which reckons freedom solely in abstraction from relations with God,natural condition, social interplay and ontological structure of human being. On the contrary, freedom can be constituted only in the context of ‘necessary condition’ which helps realize human freedom. This paper suggests the concept of freedom in terms of ‘conditional selfdetermination’. In doing so, it is aimed to suggest a model of interdisciplinary dialogue in which theology could contribute in its own way.
