Abstract

The law that Ammonites and Moabites could not enter the assembly of YHWH may seem to have been ignored when Ruth, a Moabite woman, married Boaz, an Israelite. There is a need for a clear explanation of the purpose for which this law was enacted and declared. Without an explanation of this law, serious questions may arise as to whether other covenant laws must be observed, and it may also lead to misunderstanding of Gentiles who are not permitted to enter the assembly. In the present form of the text the reasons for the exclusion of the Ammonites and Moabites from the assembly of YHWH are presented in the historical perspective of the wilderness experience, as the Ammonites and Moabites refused food and water to Israel after their Exodus from Egypt and came to curse Israel. He hired Balaam, the son of Beor(Deut 23:5-6). However, the literary context shows that the Moabites and Ammonites were excluded from the assembly of YHWH because they were classified as ממזר . In a literary context, the assembly represents a group of covenant people who enter the land of Canaan to worship God, and to protect the religious purity of their lives, it is said that neither ממזר nor descendants of ממזר can enter the assembly. However this law, which appears to forever bar the Ammonites and Moabites from entering the assembly of God, cannot last forever. In Deuteronomy 23:3, ten generation( דור עשירי ) or eternal( (עולם refers not to a timeless future but to an uncertain future. Although the regulations regarding the entry of foreigners into the Assembly of the Lord were derived from concerns about the purity of the community or historical actions, this law was not originally intended to completely exclude foreigners. The total exclusion of Gentiles contradicts Abraham’s promise to include all nations. In Deuteronomy 31:12, “foreigners”( (גר are included in the general assembly of YHWH so that they can hear the word of God on the same level as the people( עם ). The fact that Gentiles are also required to follow the covenant provisions of “hearing, learning, and teaching their children” indicates that Gentiles can also enter YHWH’s assembly through the covenant. Gentiles can also enter YHWH’s promised land and hear, learn, and keep God’s word, and learn to fear God.
