Abstract
This study deals with how South Korean President Moon Jae-in could pull off his role of mediator and ease the military tension between the United States and North Korea during the 2017-2018 North Korean nuclear crisis. Theoretically, this paper proposes the leader-centric approach to highlight Seoul’s middle-power activism to change the US President Trump’s decision calculus in terms of dealing with North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. Although South Korea was seen as less powerful to resolve the nuclear stalemate, the leader-centric approach to middle power diplomacy may open a new avenue of potential to increase South Korea’s strategic role as a middle power in the area of international security.
