Abstract

This study analyzes how the social signifier of “first place” is internalized and automated through the subject's body and affect in the film 4th Place, drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of performativity and Sara Ahmed’s politics of emotion. In particular, 4th Place holds both historical and critical significance as an object of analysis, as it has been the focus of extensive critique concerning sports violence, performance-driven ideology, and disciplinary systems. The film offers a highly refined visualization of how performative norms operate at a sensory level in Korean society. This paper focuses on how the film’s depiction of repetitive bodily training and emotional repression exceeds the boundaries of a conventional coming-of-age narrative. It demonstrates how the film reconfigures normative performativity and its rupture as a moment of ethical affective responsiveness. In this framework, affect is not merely a target of repression but operates as an “ethical intensity” that both enables and disorients the act of performing, thereby calling for an affective-ethical expansion of existing performativity theory. Whereas prior research has primarily centered on critiquing institutional sports or representing violence, this study distinguishes itself by examining how affect disrupts the rhythm of automated performance and opens the possibility for a new ethical subject. Furthermore, by reinterpreting key concepts—such as performativity, subversive repetition, and affective attachment—at the intersection of philosophical sensitivity and audiovisual resonance, this study proposes that film as a medium offers a philosophical space to think through the entanglement of performance and emotion. Ultimately, by critically engaging with the automaticity of norms and the potential for rupture through the lens of performance, affect, and ethics, this research seeks to explore the interdisciplinary nexus between affect-based theories of subjectivity and film studies.
