내면 감정의 외면 정치학: <인사이드 아웃>에 나타난 슬픔의 문화 번역

Abstract

This study examines the question of practical politics of Sadness in the animated feature Inside Out from the perspective of Judith Butler's 'ethics of mourning' and 'cultural translation.' For this task it investigates philosophical interpretations and cultural translations of 5 emotions focused on politics of sadness. 'Cultural translation' developed by Butler can provide a new angle on ethics of emotions and relational responsibility, and re-articulation of regulatory norms and laws. Ethics of mourning, responsibility, interdependence, and cultural translation that Judith emphasized in Contingency, Hegemony, and Universality(2000), Undoing Gender(2004), Precarious Life(2004) can be key concepts to delve into the character of Sadness in the current popular animated feature Inside Out. This paper argues that Sadness can shed light on politics of the emotion instead of reason because sadness is pervasive and strong enough to reach irreversiblity of mourning, ethics of empathy, responsible interdependence, and re-articualtion of regulatory norms. And it can supply the possibility of cultural translation including competing universalities because cultural translation of Sadness to recognize its coexistence in Joy and to avoid abstracting can lead to the necessity of historicizing and contextualizing current issues. Hence, we can find the politics of sadness and the possibility of 'cultural translation' in Inside Out.
