Abstract
This study analyzes director Lee Chang-dong's film Secret Sunshine, focusing on how the protago nist Shin-ae’s existential crisis is manifested through the interaction of space, body, and emotion. Departing from previous studies on religious salvation or psychological analysis, this study treats space as an active medium, investigating how trauma ruptures and reconstructs an individual's spatial world through a unique analytical framework that integrates Maurice Merleau-Ponty's 'phenomenol ogy of the body' and Sara Ahmed's 'affect theory.' This paper defines Shin-ae's journey as a process of crisis in 'embodied affect' and traces the sen sory friction and rupture between her body schema and each space. The analysis reveals that spaces such as the house, church, and beauty salon function not merely as locations but as affective terri tories of loss, attempts at salvation, resistance, and immanent recovery, confirming that the change in the affective charge of space is directly linked to her physical recovery. In conclusion, this study argues that the ending of Secret Sunshine is not a narrative of tran scendent salvation but a process of radical immanence, wherein the suffering body reconciles with sensory reality—'the flesh of the world' (la chair du monde)—and reorients itself. This approach opens a new interpretive horizon for the film and proposes a methodological potential for affective film criticism that explores the relationship between space, body, and emotion in cinematic texts.
