Abstract

This study examines the experiences and meanings of parents who transitioned from passive roles to active participation in school education. A qualitative case study was conducted at “Gaeul Elementary School” (pseudonym), located in the outskirts of a metropolitan city, involving eight parents. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. The findings revealed that the participants engaged in school activities primarily through a book club and found fulfillment in contributing to their children’s education. Within close parental networks, they experienced emotional recovery and reflected on their identity, shifting from emotional caregivers to more rational individuals. Although they attempted to deepen their involvement through student reading quizzes, they encountered structural limitations that led to frustration. Redirecting their focus back to the original goals of the book club, however, became an opportunity for further growth as parents. Based on these findings, the study calls for a paradigm shift in parental involvement policies from an adult education perspective and invites a critical re-examination of whether parents should be regarded as one of the three main agents in education.
