Abstract
Religion is related to the individual's level of risk aversion and conformity to social norms, and the doctrine of major religions requires compliance with social norms. Therefore, religion can act as a deterrent to individuals' tendency to avoid tax. From this point of view, this study investigates whether the taxpayer's religion affects the taxpayer's tax avoidance and whether the tendency differs for each major religion in Korea, which is Protestantism, Catholicism, Buddhism, other religions, and atheism. By analyzing the financial panel data which the Korea Institute of Public Finance provides, we find the respondents' tax avoidance is influenced by their religion, and the Protestants show a significantly low level of tax avoidance. These results are robust after controlling risk avoidance. These results imply that the taxpayer with religion is submissive to the social norm due to the religious doctrine or mutual social control through social networks not merely due to their risk aversion.
