Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the effect of teachers’ play expertise on their play support competence and to empirically verify the mediating role of teacher―child interaction in this relationship. To achieve this, snowball sampling was conducted among teachers working in kindergartens and childcare centers located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Daegu Metropolitan City, and Ulsan Metropolitan City. Data from 254 valid responses were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 through correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, the Sobel test, and a bootstrapping procedure iterations. The results revealed that, first, teachers’ play expertise showed a significant positive correlation with play support competence. Second, play expertise not only had a direct effect on play support competence but also exerted an indirect effect mediated by teacher―child interaction. These findings indicate that teachers’ internal beliefs and knowledge are transformed into practical support competence through interaction, and that teacher―child interaction serves as a key mechanism linking teachers’ professional expertise with their classroom practices. This study provides empirical evidence on the structural relationships among teachers’ play expertise, teacher ―child interaction, and play support competence, offering foundational data for implementing play- centered curricula.
