Abstract

This study explores the impact of family firm governance on corporate technology orientation. This study notes that prior research so far has produced inconsistent results on the influence of family firms on corporate technology orientation, and examines the impact of family ownership and family management on the technology orientation of a firm, by analyzing the data of 285 listed family firms in Korea Stock Exchange. The results show that multiple family owners’ participation in family firm ownership is negatively associated with corporate technology orientation, while family CEOs in family firms exert a positive influence on the technology orientation of a firm. These findings support the argument of recent studies that the impact of family firm governance on the corporate technology orientation varies depending on the type of family ownership and family management participation. This study also provides meaningful implications for the discussion of heterogeneity among family firms that has recently received growing recognition.
