Abstract

Changing the brand name completely differently from the existing brand name is called as radical rebranding. This radical rebranding strategy is a risky decision-making for companies, and it is necessary to consider how target customers will respond to major changes in the brand. Therefore, this study aims to analyze consumer responses to rebranding strategies. To this end, we proposed sensation-seeking tendency, which is an individual's characteristic related to change, and tried to verify how sensation-seeking tendency affects new brand attitude, and prove the psychological mechanism (resistance to change and perceived novelty) that this effect appears. As a result of the experiment, consumers with high sensation-seeking tendencies had a more positive attitude toward new brand that were completely inconsistent (differently) with existing brands than consumers with low sensation-seeking tendencies. When looking at the psychological mechanism, people with high sensation-seeking tendency perceived a high degree of novelty for completely-inconsistent new brand, and also showed low resistance toward brand changes. However, unlike this, people with low sensation-seeking tendency showed high resistance toward brand change and low perception of novelty. In conclusion, the perceived novelty and resistance toward change collectively mediated the relationship between sensation-seeking tendency and brand attitude. This study suggests that when companies plan rebranding, it is necessary to analyze the individual tendency of target customers, and that customer groups are categorized according to the level of sensation that they seek, and then appropriate management strategies are needed for each segment group.
