Abstract
The study noted that the uses and gratifications theory, which is commonly used in existing research on social media usage motivations, overlooks the influence of algorithms, which are the environmental and structural aspects of social media. Accordingly, it aimed to identify the dual nature of algorithms by analyzing the interaction between algorithms and usage motivations. For the study, the effect of adolescents' motivation to use YouTube on addiction tendency was verified, and the motivation for use was structured into four factors: 'pursuit of social relations', 'pursuit of entertainment and tension', 'pursuit of social attention', and 'pursuit of information knowledge'. The research results are summarized in two ways as follows. First, 'social relationship pursuit' motivation had the greatest positive (+) effect as the main path of addiction, followed by 'entertainment and tension relief', and 'social interest pursuit'. On the other hand, the 'pursuit of information knowledge' motivation had a negative (-) effect. The research results prove that the motivation for 'pursuit of social relations' is the individual's internal lack of relational desire and resolution of alienation is the main foothold of addiction. Second, the algorithm's dual impact. The algorithm contributed to the 'seeking of social attention' motivation and the tendency to addiction, and repeatedly and compulsively stimulated emotional and social needs to increase dependence. On the other hand, by showing a negative correlation with the motivation for 'pursuing information knowledge', it contributes to reducing the risk of addiction when the algorithm efficiently supports active use. This result shows that media addiction is determined not only by the characteristics of the platform itself but also by the user's intrinsic motivation and the way the algorithm interacts. The study’s academic implications are threefold: algorithmic duality, a revised perspective on addiction, and the validation of qualitative methodology
