Abstract
Orikuchi Shinobu 折口信夫classified a particular type of kami 神 (Japanese divinity) as marebito. For Orikuchi the term marebito deals with the man-god in between entities, who appear in this world only in particular occasions. The marebito are visiting divinities with a human aspect, due to the fact their presence is acted-out and performed by men dealing with sacred entertainment arts. Three are the foundamental qualities of the marebito: 1) the visible form 2) the magic and protective nature of their words 3) the divine quality of their actions Orikuchi exclusively theorized the notion of marebito for the Japanese context, but - according to the structural nature of his theory - is also possible to think about a large-scale application of the marebito’s category. The present paper aims to analyze some Korean religious festivals using the marebito concept. From the Korean side, this paper focus on the arming ritual of young rice plant of Jangyeon and the spring exorcism of Jeju Island and Pyeongsan’s cattle play exorcism, from the Japanese one, it deals with the yamadosan of Awajishima, the onda festival in Nara prefecture and the mura odori of Okinawa. For example, the mountain god of young rice plant ritual of Jangyeon and yamadosan mountain god of Awajishima mutually share the quality to be visible kind of gods. Also the harvest god jesok帝釈 of the Pyeongsan’s cattle play exorcism and the hojan戸長 of the first day of spring exorcism of Jeju Island may be categorized as marebito. Caompared with Japan, the hojan is similar to the taaruji田主 in Nara and the Pyeongsan cattle play exorcism shares some similarities with the modoki structure of the mura odori in Okinawa. Marebito are sacred mediators employed to make visible the kami’s presence and they are still active in many areas of Korea and Japan. Thanks to this comparative approach concerning the shearing concept of marebito in Korea and Japan, we also hope for a radical rethinking process dealing the researches about religious festivals and the history of sacred representations in both countries.
