Abstract
Cheju Island and Okinawa share many commonalities in geopolitical location as well as in historical context. Specifically, the relationship between Korea and Cheju Island and that between Japan and Okinawa all constitute the relationship of center versus periphery. This center-periphery relationship was further deeply carved through the painful struggles in modern times, known as the April Fourth Incident and the Okinawa Battle, respectively, around the closing years of the Second World War. But memories of these struggles were driven out of history and disappeared into darkness. Some authors, however, remind us of these fading memories in their literary works. In this article, I examine these memories of struggles through Kim Sŏkpŏm’s The Death of Crows and Medoruma Shun’s Putting Souls Back. These two novels, despite their dissimilarities in literary tenor, all try to revive the memories of suffering through messengers (crows and hermit crabs) who connect this world to the other world. It reveals an earnest hope of trying to heal the sorrowful memories laden with war scars, which the modern period had left, by way of premodern folk beliefs and faiths.
