Abstract

The author has mainly focused on four main things for the development of the Tamna Institute of Cheju National University. First, it is necessary to make a distinction between Jeju Culture and Tamna Culture from a present point of view of Jeju. It is called Tamna Culture before the Goryeo Dynasty and Jeju culture after it. It can be said that there is nothing much between the two other than the change of their name for the sake of the ruling adminstration. The Jeju Culture has inherited the Tamna Culture. Secondly, The cultures of Tamna might be unproved. However, the Tamna Culture has played an important role in showing the peculiar characters of various cultures in Jeju. This is the main reason we, Jeju people, have to explore, and preserve the lives and the customs in Jeju which could be traced back to the Tamna Culture. Thirdly, it is strongly expected that the Tamna Institute focus on two things: to research the traditional Jeju cultures and to train researchers for these cultures. Research centering around dialect, traditional literacy and folk customs has been extended into the other areas. Finally, different research methods have been adopted for the new directions. The Tamna Institute should be the place in which the results of individual researchs have been talked and debated. Various discussions can lead researchers, even though they have different opinions, to the innovative conclusions. This is the way to show what a genuine Jeju culture is about. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that new efforts should be made to retrieve the ancient culture of Jeju through the comparison of that of neighboring countries.
