초록

12세기 초 거란을 멸망시키고 중원을 정복한 금 제국의 흥기는 실로 놀라운 것이었다. 『金史』의 편찬자들은 금이 “병사를 신처럼 쓰면서 전쟁에서 승리하고 공격하여 취하는데 있어서 당대에 적이 없었고 10년이 되지 않아 대업을 이루었다”고 하였다. 1125년 금은 거란의 마지막 황제를 생포하고 다음해 윤 11월에는 송의 수도 변량(卞梁)을 함락하였다. 그러나 금나라는 중원을 직접 통치할 역량이 부족하였기에 ‘대초’와 ‘대제’라는 괴뢰 한족정권을 세워 남송을 견제하는 완충지대로 삼았다. 그 후 양자강 유역에서 재건된 남송과 충돌하였는데 금의 기마병도 무덥고 습한 남중국에서 고전하였고 동아시아 세력균형을 극복할 수 없었다. 남송의 고종은 1141년 금의 책봉을 받고 세공을 바치는 굴욕적인 조건으로 맹약을 맺지만 다른 한편 정국의 안정을 도모할 수 있는 기회를 가지게 되었다. 그러나 1160년 초 금의 해릉왕이 맹약을 깨고 남송 정벌에 나서지만 실패한다. 이후 금과 남송의 전쟁은 교착상태에 놓였고 1165년 새로운 맹약으로 평화로운 공존관계가 수립되었다. 12세기 금과 송이 전쟁과 타협의 과정을 통해 맺은 일련의 맹약들은 동아시아 지정학적 세력균형의 현실을 이해하는데 중요한 단서를 제공한다.

Abstract

In the early 12th century, it took mere one decade after the official founding of the Jin dynasty to conquer the two dominant empires of Khitan and Song China. It was an achievement that amazed the compilers of the Jinshi [History of the Jin Dynasty]. The Jin captured the last Khitan khan in 1125 and sacked the Song capital, taking both the retired and reigning Song emperors in the following year. It appeared that the Jurchens had completed unification of “all under heaven.” However, the remnants of the Song regrouped in the south and established the Southern Song state that successfully resisted Jin attacks. In order to suppress resistance of the Han Chinese, the Jin court established the puppet regimes of Chu and Qi in succession to rule over the former territory of the Song south of the Yellow River. The Jin also continued to chase the Southern Song court, but the Jurchen cavalry struggled in hot and humid environment, and Song navy effectively blocked advances from the north. The two states signed the treaty in 1141 and maintained peaceful relations based on fixed border and annual payments by the Southern Song. However, around 1160 the ambitious Jin emperor Hailing started a war to conquer the Southern Song and unify China. In the end, his “southern expedition” failed and he was assassinated. The Jin and Southern Song continued to fight for a few years before they finally agreed to a new treaty in 1165 that ensured peace for almost four decades. The twelfth century Jin-Song relations clearly illustrate how conflicts and compromises reflect the historical reality of East Asian geopolitical balance of power.
