초록

12세기 후반 금 세종과 남송 효종은 근 30년 동안 군사 충돌을 자제하면서 변경의 평화를 유지하여 크게 번영을 이루었다. 그러나 동아시아 다원적 국제질서와 세력균형은 13세기 초 초원을 통합한 칭기즈칸의 몽골세력에 의해 와해되었다. 몽골의 팽창을 막을 수 있었던 가장 유력한 세력이었던 금은 대하·송과의 관계가 악화되면서 몽골의 공격에 효과적으로 대응하지 못하였다. 금은 오랜 기간 원만한 관계를 유지한 대하와 충돌하였으며 왕조의 덕운(德運) 선포와 북송의 수도였던 개봉으로의 천도는 남송을 크게 자극하였다. 이에 남송이 세폐의 납부를 거부하며 기존의 맹약을 부정하자 금은 1217년부터 7년 동안 남벌을 진행하였으나 큰 성과를 거두지 못하였고 오히려 군사와 물자를 소모하여 몽골의 공격에 더욱 취약하게 되었다. 이어 몽골이 대하와 금을 차례로 정복하면서 10세기 이후 유지되었던 동아시아 다원적 국제질서가 붕괴되었다.

Abstract

During the reigns of Jin Shizong and Southern Song Xiaozong in the latter half of the 12th century, East Asia enjoyed decades of peace and prosperity. However, the rapidly growing Mongol power soon destroyed East Asian multi-state system and balance of power in the early 13th century. The Jin was perhaps the only power capable of containing the Mongol expansion. Facing relentless Mongol attacks, the Jin emperor Xuanzong moved the capital to Kaifeng, the site of the former capital of the Song dynasty, for better defensive position against Mongol onslaught. However, Jin’s move antagonized the Southern Song, and it led to Jin’s seven-year “southern expedition” that drained Jin’s military resources. The Jin dynasty also failed to improve its relations with the Tangut Xia in the west that further damaging its efforts against the Mongol invasion. In the 13th century Chinggis Khan and his successors destroyed the Xia, the Jin, and finally the Southern Song to build a world empire that would transcend the historical and geographical limits of “China.”
