이 연구는 제주4⋅3에 의해 발생한 애월면 지역의 교육계 피해 실태를 살펴보고, 공동체의 교육 재건 활동 과정을 사회적 자본의 관점에서 분석하였다. 애월면은 제주4⋅3으로 인해 다수 학교가 전소되고, 임시 폐교되었으며, 교원 및 학생의 인적 피해 또한 컸다. 애월면 공동체는 이러한 교육 피해에 대응해 기성회조직, 자발적 모금, 노동력 제공, 이웃마을과의 협력 등 다양한 방식으로 학교재건에 나섰다. 이 과정에서 결속형 사회적 자본은 주민 상호 간의 신뢰와 협동을토대로 위기 극복의 기반이 되었으며, 교량형 사회적 자본은 이웃 마을과 외부후원자와의 협력을 통해 교육 재건의 역량을 확장하는 데 기여하였고, 연결형사회적 자본은 교육청 및 지방정부와의 연계를 통해 제도적 지속성과 학교 운영의 공공성을 확보하는 역할을 수행하였다. 애월면 공동체의 교육 재건의 과정은교육을 매개로 한 공동체 회복의 가능성과 사회적 자본의 역할을 보여주는 중요한 사례로 평가된다.
Abstract
This study examined the damage to the education community in the Aewol region area caused by state violence called the Jeju April 3 incident and analyzed the process of rebuilding the educational infrastructure of the community from the perspective of social capital. In Aewol region, many schools were burned down and temporarily closed due to Jeju April 3, and human damage to teachers and students was also great. In response to these educational damages, the Aewol region community started to rebuild schools in various ways, including organizing established associations, voluntary fundraising, providing labor, and cooperation with neighboring villages. In this process, Bonding social capital became the basis for overcoming the crisis based on mutual trust and cooperation among residents, Bridging social capital contributed to expanding the capacity for educational reconstruction through cooperation with neighboring villages and external sponsors, and Linking social capital played a role in securing institutional continuity and publicity in school management through connection with the Office of Education and local governments. The process of rebuilding education in the Aewol region community is evaluated as an important example of the possibility of community recovery through education and the role of social capital.
