초록

To evaluate the depigmentation effects of Camellia sinensis water extracts (CSWEs), different extracts were topically applied to artificially hyperpigmented spots on the back skin of three brownish guinea pigs (weight: 450~500 g) induced by 1,500 mJ/cm2 of ultraviolet B irradiation. The CSWEs (30 μL) were applied twice per day for 6 days per week. After a 4-week application period, the spots were removed by biopsy punch under anesthesia and subjected to histological examination. The artificially hyperpigmented spots treated with the CSWEs clearly lightened in comparison with the control groups. In the fourth week, the melanin indices for CSWE-treated groups were significantly lower (p<0.00l) than those of the control groups. The depigmentation effects of CSWEs were also verified through the histological examinations, which ascertained the degree of melanin pigmentation, the proliferation of melanocytes, and the synthesis of melanosomes by immunostaining with FM, S-100, and gp 100, respectively. We found that CSWEs inhibited the proliferation of melanocytes and the synthesis of melanosomes in vivo in brownish guinea pigs, thereby showing a definite skin-whitening effect. Among the CSWEs, the depigmentation effect of white tea was the highest and was superior to those of the well-known depigmenting agents, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate and hydroquinone.
