이 연구는 1990년대 이후 국내 학계를 중심으로 축적되어 온 동해 지명 관련 학술 논문의 연구 동향과성과를 체계적으로 분석하고, 향후 연구의 전망을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 결과, 한국에서 동해 지명연구는 초기의 역사 문헌 및 동서양 고지도를 활용한 사료 실증 연구를 기점으로, 2000년대 이후 국제기구의 지명 표준화 규범과 국제법적 해석을 중심으로 한 이론화 단계로 발전했다. 그리고 2010년대 이후에는 학교교육, 정체성 형성, 국제 홍보와 오류 시정 등 실천적 영역으로 연구가 확장되었음을 확인하였다. 이는 동해/일본해 병기 논의가 단순한 외교 현안을 넘어 역사·국제규범·교육·공공외교가 결합된 복합적 연구 영역으로 정착했음을 의미한다. 향후 동해 지명 연구는 디지털 지도 환경과 다자적 해양질서를 포괄하는 융합 연구로 더욱 심화될 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to systematically analyze the research trends and achievements of academic papers related to the name of the East Sea, which have been accumulated mainly by the Korean academic community since the 1990s, and to present the outlook for future research. As a result of the study, research on the name of the East Sea in Korea began with empirical research using historical documents and old maps from the East and West, and since the 2000s, it developed into a stage of theorization focused on the naming standardization rules of international organizations and international legal interpretations. And since the 2010s, it was confirmed that the research expanded into practical areas such as school education, identity formation, international promotion, and error correction. This means that the discussion on the concurrent use of East Sea/Sea of Japan has moved beyond a simple diplomatic issue and has settled as a complex research area where history, international rules, education, and public diplomacy are combined. In the future, research on the name of the East Sea needs to be further deepened into convergence research that covers the digital map environment and the multilateral marine order.
