19세기에는 문자나 회화 표현을 매개로 한 문인관료들의 개인 체험 기록이 크게 증가하였다. 특히 지방도시평양에서 평안도관찰사가 주재한 관변행사가 적극적으로 시각화되었다. 행사 내용은 행렬과 연회, 선유, 군사훈련 등이며, 행사 장면을 근접 포착해 구체적으로 묘사하거나 평양성의 全景을 재현한 성읍도에 삽입하였다. 본 논문에서는신자료를 통해 연회와 강상행렬 장면이 조합된 새로운 도상과 고종대 군사제도 개편으로 생긴 친군서영 및 진위대 훈련 모습을 살펴보았다. 19세기말부터 조성된 평양의 개신교 선교시설의 위치와 규모도 최초로 확인하였다. 그와 같은화면 내용과 표현 방식은 18세기 말에 건설된 화성 관련 시각자료와 연계된다. 또한 주문자로 추정되는 평안도관찰사가 지역 통치자로서 자신의 권위를 극대화하고자 평양성의 전체 경관을 행사 장면의 배경으로 설정했다고 생각된다.
Abstract
In the nineteenth century, scholar-officials actively recorded their personal experiences through letter and painting. In particular, government-sponsored events presided over by the Pyongan-do Provincial Governor in the regional city of Pyongyang were visualized with notable frequency. These events included processions, banquets, boating, and military drills. The scenes were either depicted in close-up with detailed events or incorporated into panoramic cityscape views of Pyongyang Fortress. In this study, newly identified materials are used to examine a novel iconography that combines banquet scenes with riverside processions, as well as depictions of training exercises carried out by the Pyongyang provincial forces following the military reforms implemented during the reign of King Gojong. The study also identifies the presence of Protestant missionary facilities that entered Pyongyang in the late nineteenth century. These subjects and modes of representation are closely related to the visual materials associated with Hwaseong Fortress, constructed under King Jeongjo in the late eighteenth century. It further appears that the Pyongan-do Provincial Governor—presumed to have been the patron of the work—intended to heighten his authority as a regional administrator by situating these events against the backdrop of the Pyongyang fortress landscape.
