일본의 저명한 학자 네 사람은 2010년 ‘지명의 발생과 기능’이라는 저서를 출판하였는데, 그 목적은 ‘일본해’라는 명칭이 마테오리치 이전부터 나타났고 그 이름이 비록 다른 이름들과 같이 쓰였지만 점진적으로 우세하게 되어 19세기 부터 국제적으로 정착되고 공인되었다는 사실을 보이기 위한 것이었다. 본 논문에서는 심층분석을 통해 해당 저서에 나타나는 오류들을 지적하고 동해명칭에 관련된 사안에 대해 올바른 관점을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
Four eminent Japanese scholars published ‘Origin and Functions of Geographical names’ in 2010. The purpose of the book was focused on justifying ‘Sea of Japan’ by claiming that the name appeared long before Matteo Ricci and it has been coexisted with other names before 19th century. They also claimed that the name gradually became prevailing and recognized internationally. However, based on detailed analysis, we find their claims are self-contradicting in significant terms, which are from self-centered interpretations, therefore yielding unacceptable mistakes. We suggest the appropriate way to interpretate the usage of names by academically correct and historically supported point of view.
