한국 가톨릭 종교조각에서의 이미지의 수용과 창작 - 성육신과 이콘 담론을 중심으로 -

이 논문은 ‘한국 가톨릭조각에서의 성육신(Incarnation)과 이콘(Icon)의 담론의 적용’을 통해서 ‘한국 가톨릭조각에서의 이미지의 인식론’에 관해 연구한다. 이러한 연구를 위해서, 먼저 가톨릭조각과 한국 가톨릭조각이 어떻게 규정될 수 있는지를 정의한다. 이어서 한국 가톨릭조각의 현재에 이르는 역사를 대략적으로 검토함으로써 한국 가톨릭조각의 통시적(diachronic)이고 공시적(synchronic)인 맥락을 전체적으로 조망한다. 이러한 연구를 거쳐, 이미지와 관련이 있는 이콘(Icon), 에이콘(Eikon), 첼렘(Zelem), 이마고(Imago)의 의미와 변천을 연구한다. 특히 서구 교회사에서 하느님의 형상과 관련한 이콘 담론과 성육신 담론을 둘러싸고 벌어졌던 ‘성상 숭배파(iconolatry)’와 ‘성상 파괴파(iconoclasm)’들의 힘겨운 대립을 거쳐 ‘성상 옹호’라는 입장에 도달한 가톨릭조각의 오늘날 현재적 상황을 분석한다. 한편 본고는 이콘에 대한 서구의 해석을 한국적 현실 속에 도입했던 한국 가톨릭조각을 실제적으로 분석한다. 그렇게 함으로써 한국 가톨릭조각이 사용한 이콘이 서구 가톨릭조각의 이콘과 어떻게 다른지 살펴보고, 한국 가톨릭조각이 당면한 과제와 문제의식을 종합적으로 파악한다. 본고는 ‘성육신과 이콘의 존재론’에 대한 연구와 ‘체현(embodiment)와 이마고의 인식론’에 대한 연구를 병행함으로써 한국 가톨릭조각이 긍정적인 입장에서 보다 더 발전할 수 있는 미래적 가능성을 모색한다.
Abstract
This paper studies 'the epistemology of images in Korean Catholic sculpture' through 'Incarnation and Application of Icon Discourse in Korean Catholic Sculpture'. For this study, we first define how Catholic Sculpture and Korean Catholic Sculpture can be defined. It then looks at the diachronic and synchronic context of the Korean Catholic Sculpture as a whole by roughly examining the present-day history of Korean Catholic Sculpture. Through these studies, I study the meaning and transition of Icon, Eikon, Zelem, and Imago related to images. Especially in the western church history, we have reached the position of 'iconolatry' through the tough confrontation of 'iconolatry' and 'iconoclasm' that spread around the iconic discourse and incarnation discourse related to the image of God. So we analyze this current situation of a Catholic Sculpture today. Meanwhile, this paper actually analyzes the Korean Catholic Sculpture that introduced the Western interpretation of the Icon to the Korean reality. By doing so, I will examine how the Icon used by Korean Catholic Sculptures differs from the iconography of Western Catholic Sculptures, and comprehensively grasp the challenges and problems faced by Korean Catholic Sculptures. This paper explores the possibility of further development of Korean Catholic Sculptures from a positive point of view by studying the study of 'incarnation ontology of icon' and 'embodiment and epistemology of imago'.
