초록
This paper examines the state of the field of Korean Buddhist sculpture in Korean academia. Basically introducing recent publications including articles, conference papers, and exhibition catalogues that have displayed novelty in terms of topics and methods, I demonstrate that the field has developed internally. I also propose possible directions and topics to pursue, in order to consolidate the study as a Humanistic discipline. First, I suggest that we need to rethink the meaning of stylistic changes as a tool for not just gaining connoisseurial information of dates, region, and artist, but also understanding the goals and intentions the makers and users of the image had. Second, it is necessary to break the traditional art historical boundaries by medium, such as sculpture, painting, and crafts, or by genre, such as Buddhist art, funerary art, architecture, and so on. I illustrate how the interdisciplinary as well as cross-topical approach help us better understand the visual and material culture of the period and region under consideration. Lastly, I suggest that symbolism should be considered in the study of Buddhist sculpture. As long as we conceive Buddhist sculptures as sacred objects rather than art historical object, we can retrieve their true meaning in their original context.
