초록
The purpose of this study is to verify the mediating effect of perceived stress in the relationship between physical activity and suicidal ideation among Korean adolescents. Using raw data from the 19th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2023), complex sample cross-tabulation analysis was conducted to examine the effects of general characteristics, levels of different types of physical activity, and levels of perceived stress on suicidal ideation among adolescents. To analyze the mediating effect of stress in the relationship between physical activity and suicidal ideation, Baron and Kenny’s three-step mediation analysis was performed, and the Sobel test was conducted to verify the significance of the mediating effect. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0. There were differences in suicidal ideation according to gender, school level, grade, academic performance, household economic status, and residential status. Significant differences in suicidal ideation were also found according to types of physical activity and stress levels. Stress showed a complete mediating effect in the relationship between 5-day physical activity and 3-day vigorous physical activity with suicidal ideation, while stress showed a partial mediating effect in the relationship between strength training and suicidal ideation. In conclusion, suicide prevention in adolescents can be achieved by improving mental health through stress reduction via regular physical activity. This requires specific and careful approach strategies considering various socio-demographic factors, and various physical activity programs that match individual adolescents’ interests should be established and actively implemented both inside and outside schools.
