Abstract
To enhance firm's economic performance by innovations, it is crucial for firm to establish sound protection strategies to appropriate economic return of the innovations. To appropriate economic return of innovations, a firm can employ various appropriation mechanisms, which can be grouped into statutory(patent, utility model, design, trademark) and non-statutory(secrecy, complex design, leadtime). Although, the effects of characteristics of innovation, firm, and sector on the choice of firm's appropriation mechanisms have been widely researched, researchers have been largely focused on the differetiated effects of product innovation versus process innovation on the firm's choice on appropriation mechanisms. On this background, the current paper investigates the effects of level of newness, scope of newness, and lifetime of product innovation on the firm's choice on appropriation mechanisms. Our results shows that firms more frequently use design and complex design for architectural product innovation, complex design and leadtime for new to the firm product innovation, secrecy for product innovation with long lifetime. Especially, the frequent use of design for architectural innovation shows that it becomes increasingly important for firms to create and protect symbolic value of new products based on products' aesthetic feature and dominant design.
