Abstract
Anna Maria van Schurman was one of the most famous intellectuals in 17th century Europe. Her fame was based on not only her profound learning but also her Dissertatio logica(1641) in which she argued for the equal academic education for woman. Her writings and letters were read in the Republic of the United Provinces and beyond, and inspired a debate about the intellectual abilities of women. However, many students have commented that she was conventional in her view on women and education of women, though they saw her an example for other women. Because she emphasised a traditional role of women and limited members to get better educational opportunities to wealthy single women. But her ‘moderate’ stance should not be interpreted as their acceptance of the traditional view of womanhood, considering the negative attitudes and hostility toward women. In her Dissertatio logica, the format of her defence of women’s education is purely academic, a formal exercise in logic. The syllogistic reasoning keeps her inner thoughts and feelings at a distance. Only in her letters, we can see her independent spirit and quiet conviction. In letters on women’s education, Schurman mounted a very convincing defence of the fundamental right of all women to devote themselves exclusively to scholarship. She really didn’t want to be an exceptional woman. Schurman also played an important part in women’s education of 17th century England. Her Learned Maid, an English translation of Dissertatio logica was the first book that emphasised the equality of natural intelligence between man and woman and argued for an equal opportunity of higher education for women in England. Thus she exerted significant influence for the cause of women’s education in England both by advocation it and by serving as example to the women advocates of better education for their sex in 17th century England, such as Bathsua Makin and Hannah Woolley.
