본 연구는 17세기 유럽의 여성 지식인을 대표하는 안나 마리아 판 슈르만(1607-1678)이 자신의 인식을 투사한 미술작품을 생산하며 사회와 어떤 방식으로 교류했는지 고찰함으로써 판 슈르만의 예술 활동에 관한 확장된 연구를 지향한다. 판 슈르만은 자화상 및 다양한 예술이 지닌 시각성을 자신의 정체성을 인식하고 표현하는 도구로 활용했다. 이 과정에서 판 슈르만이 선택한 예술은 자수, 캘리그라피, 종이 자르기 공예, 유리 인그레이빙과 같은 공예 장르로서 동시대 여성들에게 친숙한 표현양식과 소재를 포함한다. 본 연구는 당대 여성 지식인의 시대적 자의식이 시각예술작품을 통해 전달되는 방식을 살펴보되, 특히 오늘날 서양 미술사학에서 주류 미술로 다루지 않는 종이 자르기 공예와 유리 인그레이빙과 같은 공예작품을 포함하여 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
This study examines the representation of Anna Maria van Schurman’s (1607-1678) thoughts and aspirations in her work. This study suggests that her work reveals varying aspects of van Schurman’s self-consciousness as a leading female intellectual of her time. Van Schurman’s use of self-portraits and other visual genres is an exploration and an expression of the multiple facets of her self-identity. Her artistic practice includes embroidery, calligraphy, paper-cutting, and glass engraving. All these handicrafts were considered women’s skills; van Schurman’s use of them reveals her solidarity with her contemporaries. The present study proposes that women’s craft arts, such as paper-cutting art and glass engraving, deserve scholarly attention as they contain the practitioners’ sensibilities of the day. Van Schurman’s life and works offer a rich source for this examination.
