메리 커틀러(Mary M. Cutler, 1865∼1948)는 조선에서 모두 42년간 의료 선교사로서 활동하였다. 1893년에 조선에 도착한 이래로 1935년까지, 미 감리회 WFMS의 의료선교사로서 메리 커틀러는 여성병원이었던 보구녀관· 광혜여원 등에서 활발한 진료활동을 전개하였다. 그 과정에서 간호원 및 의사 등의 여성의료인력을 양성하는 한편, 상시적인 순회진료사업을 실시 하여 의료소외지역에 대한 의료혜택을 제공하였다. 이러한 메리 커틀러의 활동은 조선에서 여성병원의 안정적 운영을 가능케 하였으며, 여성 자활과 조선인에 의한 여성진료가 이루어질 수 있는 기반을 마련한 것이었다. 그리고 찾아오는 환자를 대상으로 하는 데에서 더 적극적으로 환자를 찾아가는 방식의 새로운 의료 서비스를 제공하는데에도 기여했다. 곧 메리 커틀러의 활동은 여성의료를 위한 끊임없는 새로운 시도와 도전이었으며, 한국의 여성의료 영역의 확장 과정이었다. 이는 본인 스스로 미국 사회에서 여성에 대한 편견과 부정적 인식을 극복하고 의학을 공부하거나, 기독교적 사회개혁운동을 추진하는 가운데 체화된 도전적 여성의식을 바탕으로 한 것이었다. 그리고 조선의 여성들이 남성들과 같이 의료혜택을 향유하며, 전문교육 을 통해 간호원으로서, 혹은 의사로서 자립해 나아가기를 바라는 인식에서 비롯된 것이기도 하였다.
Abstract
Mary M. Cutler had worked as a medical missionary in the early modern Korea for 42 years. Since Cutler had arrived in the Korea in 1893, she had provided volunteer medical services as a medical missionary of Methodist Church in American which was called WFMS until 1935. She had trained women doctors and nurses, had done the traveling dispensary project, and had provided the isolated area with medical cares. These kinds of Cutler’s activities were a new trial and a challenge against the existing women medical care, and had extended the area of women medical services endlessly. It was that she had overcome the social prejudice and negative understanding in America by herself and had studied, and was on the bases of embodied and challenging female consciousness through promoting the social reform activities. And she hoped that Korean women had also enjoyed medical care the same as Korean men, and had also stood on their own foot as a nurse or a women doctor with special medical education. With these kinds of Cutler’s activities, women hospital in Korea could had been managed to steadily, Korean women doctor and volunteers could had been able to do women medical care services through training medical people. And she had expanded new service like the visiting medical service from the general medical cares. These her achievement had played an important role in the Korean medical history, and had played a role to emancipate Korean women from the disease.
