Abstract

This study aims to analyze the technological knowledge landscape of the Jeolla region (Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk) from an evolutionary economic geography perspective and identify potential technologies that can inform regional industrial strategies. Based on patent data from 2019 to 2023, this research quantified technological specialization levels by calculating the Revealed Technological Advantage (RTA) for each region and identified technology fields with high potential for future transitions through relatedness density analysis. In particular, technologies with RTA values greater than 0.9 and up to 1.0 were defined as potential technologies and examined for their policy implications. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA)-based topic modeling on patents classified within these potential technologies, the study identified the technological orientation and key industrial linkage structures of each region. The findings reveal that Gwangju demonstrates potential strengths in mechanical and control-related technologies, particularly in electronics, energy, and automotive sectors; Jeonnam specializes in food, chemical, and environmental technologies; and Jeonbuk shows potential strengths in precision instrumentation, agricultural biotechnology, and composite materials. Additionally, Gwangju and Jeonnam exhibited a concentration in specific technological fields, whereas Jeonbuk adopted a more diversified strategy, enhancing technological versatility. This study provides a quantitative diagnosis of technological capabilities in the Jeolla region through data-driven analysis and offers foundational insights for region-specific industrial strategy formulation. Considering previous regional industrial policies' limitations of uncritically following high-tech trends leading to redundant investments, the potential technology trajectory-based analysis presented in this study serves as a strategic alternative for efficient resource allocation and targeted industrial development.
