초록
젠더나 여러 젠더 변이의 개념을 통해 보면, 로마제국 당시 기독교도 사이에 표출된 젠더의 개념과 그 사회적 역할에 대한 개념이 시기에 따라서 차이가 있음을 보게 된다. 이 글에서는 초기 기독교 사회에 보이는 젠더 개념의 변천을 주시하였다. 구체적으로는 젠더 역전과 관련된 내용이 두드러졌던 테클라와 페르페투아 및 프리스길라 세 여성을 중심으로 젠더 역전의 양상과 의미를 살펴보았다. 테클라는 세례를 준다든가, 가르친다든가 하는 남성적 영역에 도전하였던 여성이었지만, 길을 나설 때 남성의 옷을 입고 다녔던, 즉 공적인 영역에서 남성적 젠더를 가져야 했던 여성이었다. 페르페투아의 경우, 영적 환상에서 여성의 젠더를 벗고 남성적 몸을 가짐으로써 전투에서 승리할 수 있었다. 반면, 그리스도가 여성의 옷을 입고 나타났다는 프리스카의 경우는 놀라운 젠더 역전의 사례, 젠더 평등의 한 국면이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이는 여성형 소피아가 예수 그리스도 혹은 하나님으로도 교차되어 나타나는 Q 문서와도 맥락을 같이하는 것이다. 그러나 후자의 관점은 사라지거나, 정통 기독교 세계로 수용되지 못하였다. 즉 평등한 젠더 전환이나 젠더 초월의 사례는, 사라지게 되거나, 이단으로 낙인찍히게 되었던 반면, 여성이 남성적 젠더를 취하는 것, 즉 여성을 없애는 것이 성스러움으로의 전환이라는 이념은 점차 확산되게 되었다. 이리하여 초기의 보다 젠더 교차 혹은 초월적인 사고나 가르침은 당시의 기존 가부장적 질서와 만나면서 점차 남성 중심적 젠더 체계로 변하게 되고 고착화되기에 이르렀다.
Abstract
This paper is to survey the meaning of trans-gender or gender reversal in early Christianity, tracing the process of intensification of women's subordination to men and the patriarchical social order associated with gender. The reversal of roles between the social body and the physical body reflects the social oppression of the patriarchical society. The social status and roles of women in the early Christian communities seems to be relatively equal to men. The practice of oral preaching as well as ecstatic experience or prophecy, as performed in the “New Prophecy” movement, would have given women more opportunities to play significant roles in the Christian community. However, as time passed, the social position of women became gradually lowered, the transition of which is reflected, in my opinion, in the gender reversal episodes. The cases of Thecla, Prisca and Perpetua illustrate the human body as a metaphor of the social body, offering particularly effective media for the transition from a relatively more egalitarian society to a more oppressive patriarchy. Prisca’s vision of Christ in the form of a woman shows a phenomenon of trans-genderism which could be permitted in the former. However, Perpetua who fought successfully against an Egyptian by becoming a man and Thecla’s dressing like a man show the tendency toward an 'andro-centric' Christian society.
