Abstract

This study explores the principle of image composition of archival films. Along with the increased interest in archives in various fields of society, the accessibility and utilization of archives increased as the media environment changed, resulting in an archival transformation. This study attempts to theoretically explain the relationship between images in archive films, referring to previous discussions that intensively analyzed the practices or effects of archive for the production of alternative knowledge and power. The archive gives those who explore it the joy of discovery, such as impulses, fevers, and shudders. Those who use the archive take the principle of selection and the principle of integration, that is, a specific material among the various materials in the archive, and build relationships between the materials collected in such a way. In this process, the archive film applies the principle of similarity for the relationship between images. The principle of similarity can be divided into the principle of external similarity and the principle of internal similarity. The former corresponds to the relationship between images with sensory similarity, and the latter corresponds to the relationship between images linked to a specific idea. Through this principle, archival films provide the audience with the opportunity to think repeatedly about specific ideas along with repeated experiences of similar images. In conclusion, the archive film shows the changes in historical flow themselves through the repeated images and ideas in history.
