Abstract
Godard's <History(s) of Cinema> is a montage of disparate imagefragments extracted from the archives of film history, recombined in a non-linear order. Godard intentionally separates the image materials of the fictional construction of cinema from the original context to which they originally belonged, and rearranges them with image fragments in a completely different context. The montage of these heterogeneous fragments simultaneously makes us look at and evoke memories of the world and History (History with a capital letter) from a completely new perspective. If this can be called a new historical narrative methodology, the goal of this paper is to consider what kind of utility and meaning this method has, and what kind of historical image it presents. Godard actively cited historians such as Braudel, Bloch, Benjamin, Peggy, Michelet, and Malraux in <History(s) of Film> who broke the linear and empirical understanding of history and proposed a new historical perspective different from the existing one. It presents an alternative view of history based on a different view of time (anachronism). And, as a form of image arrangement in which this view of history is creatively reflected, film history and the image of history are constituted.
