이 글은 90년대 이후 우리 문학계에서 활발하게 논의되고 있는 환상 문학의 이론적 가능성을 모색하고 그 해답으로서 최근 메타 픽션의 한 흐름－김영하의 아랑은 왜에서 대표적으로 나타나고 있는－을 제시하려는 시도이다. 환상 문학의 이론을 확립한 토도로프에 의하면 “환상적인 것(the fantastic)”의 정의는 현실(the real)과 상상(the imaginary) 사이에서의 “망설임”인데, 실상 이는 개념적 확실성에 반대되는 불확실성과 모호함의 다른 이름이다. 그러나 토도로프의 환상 이론이 “현실”에 대한 합의가 가능했던(혹은 가능하다고 믿었던) 19세기 사실주의 소설의 풍토 위에서 탄생한 것이라면 이른바 모더니즘 텍스트들에서 보이는 환상은 또다른 종류의 것이다. 모더니즘 텍스트들에서는 현실 자체가 언어로 재현하기 어려운 것이 되어버리기 때문이다. 그러므로 이들은 언어가 리얼리티를 담보할 수 없다는 문제 의식을 공유한다. 최근의 메타 픽션은 이와 같은 “모더니즘” 텍스트의 기본적인 대립인 리얼리티와 픽션의 관계에 대해 새로운 견해를 제시한다. 그들은 리얼리티란 이야기(허구)로는 도달할 수 없는 절대적 기의가 아니라 이질적인 이야기들을 충돌시키는 재텍스트화를 통해 능동적으로 “구성”할 수 있는 것이라고 여긴다. 그리고 이때 구성된 현실은 단수가 아니라 복수이며 독자들은 메타 텍스트가 제시하는 다수의 리얼리티 사이에서 새로운 형태의 망설임, 즉 환상(the fantastic)을 경험하게 된다.
Abstract
This article attemps to check the literary possibility of “the fantastic” novels which has produced various kinds of literary discourse since the 1990's. As a new kind ofthe fantastic novel, this article suggests the lately procuced Meta-fiction. (김영하's ꡔ아랑은 왜ꡕ is chosen as the representative) Tzvetan Todorov, who had established the theory of “the fantastic” novels, defined the “the fantastic” as hesitation of the hero between “the real” and “the imaginary”. In fact, this hesitation means uncertainty of the cognition. Todorov's theory of “the fantastic” was the product of 19th century(During that period, people can be sure of “the real”). But so called Modernist writers think that “the real” itself go beyond the language.(Let's call it “the Real”) So they think the novel－which is made of language－ can't represent “the Real”. Lately produced Meta- fictions suggest the new view of the realationship between “the Real” and “the fiction”. They think they can “compose” the “Real” by col- liding two literary heterogeneitic styles. As the Result of that practice, “the Real” is not one, but plural. So readers can experience the new kind of hesitation, the “fantastic” between the many realities
