서구 ‘환상성’이론에서 본 나도향의 「꿈」 - 장르의 구성요건을 중심으로 -

환상이란 용어는 흔히 ‘실재’의 반의어로 이해된다. 그러나 실재하지 않는 것이 존재하지 않는 것은 아니다. 따라서 환상문학의 논의에서 ‘환상’의 개념은 존재의 개연성 자체가배제되는 ‘비존재’의 개념, 즉 ‘초자연’의 요소로 이해하여야 한다. 하지만 ‘초자연적 요소’ 가 현존한다고 해서 모두가 ‘환상’인 것은 아니다. 초자연적 요소는 동서고금의 모든 문학에 두루 편재하는 문학의 역사 그 자체라고 보아도 무방하기 때문이다. 근대문학장르로서의 환상문학은 ‘현실’의 자장 내에서 발생하는 초자연적 사건에 한해 ‘환상’의 자격을 부여한다. 이는 이 문학이 ‘이성중심주의에 대한 회의’라는 인식론적 세계관을 함의하고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 18세기 후반 낭만주의를 시대적 배경으로 탄생한 환상문학 장르는비슷한 시기 모습을 보인 추리소설과 마찬가지로 “완성된 형태로 태어났다.”고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 장르의 성립 조건을 크게 ‘존재의 개념(즉, 비존재)과 연관된 초자연적요소의 현존’, ‘사실주의적 경향’, ‘비극적 결말과 세계관’의 세 가지 필수적 요소와 ‘문화적 상대성’, ‘신환상성과의 관계’ 등 두 가지 부가적 요소로 제시하였다. 그리고 장르 성립을 충족하는 국문학의 사례로 20세기 초 나도향의 「꿈」을 분석하였다. 이 연구는 건조한장르적 개념을 거푸집 삼아 이루어졌으며 작품의 미학적 가치는 고려의 대상에서 배제하였다. 나도향의 「꿈」은 근, 현대 한국문학에서 서구의 환상문학이론에 가장 잘 부합하는대표적인 사례 중의 하나라고 판단된다. 이는 사회 현실을 인간 내면의 원초적 감성으로그려내고자 했던 작가의 전반적인 문학적 성향을 고려할 때 우연이 아닐 것이다. 그에게현실은, 환상문학과 마찬가지로 수용하기 어려운 의문과 이해 불가의 대상이었을 것이기 때문이다.
Abstract
In order to address ‘fantastic literature’, it is essential a profound understanding of the concept of the genre, since the meanings involved in the term of ‘fantasy’ are too varied and broad, in addition to the fact that literary tradition -which deals with ‘fantasy’- is very olden. In particular, if fantasy literature is considered as a product of Romanticism, which was born with a specific worldview at the end of the 18th century–an epistemological reaction against Western ‘logocentrism’ –it is necessary to delimit it from other neighboring genres such as myths, medieval tales, fairy tales, magic realism and ‘lo real maravilloso americano(The Marvelous Real in America)’, among others. Doubtlessly, the effects of ‘the fantastic’, which are mechanisms of emotional and epistemological reactions caused by supernatural phenomena, can be relative according to the historical-cultural context of each society. No matter how different cultures are, the concept of ‘reality’ always prevails; likewise, the common purpose of ‘the fantastic’ genre is to pose an essential question about that idea of ‘reality’. In this sense, works of fantastic literature from different cultures can be analyzed with an identical methodology. In this research, after examining the constituent elements defined in the fantastic Western theory, “The dream” –tale written by Ra Do-Hyang (Korea, 1902-1926) – shall be analyzed. The abovementioned literary work is very remarkable from the ‘fantastic genre perspective’, as it satisfies most of the basic prerequisites of the ‘fantastic’ theoretical framework. Likewise, in this academic article, biographical elements and aesthetic aspects of the text shall be excluded, which are generally considered in the study related to the author. Thus, just the main rules required by fantastic literature shall be used to compare consistency between text and genre.
