Abstract

Through the ‘chsun film(朝鮮映畵)’ discourse in the late 1930’s, this study examines that the chsun film, on the one hand, tried to achieve its domain in the film market and establish its position in the culture and the art, on the other, provided the ethnic narrative of the colonized. In the late 1930’s, the filmmakers made a positive attempt to represent ‘the chsun’, which made the difference between the chsun film and the others, with intent to overcome the backwardness in the aesthetic and the technique. The journalism and the culture elites chose the films such as 「Arirang(아리랑)」(1926), 「The ferryboat without the ferryman(임자 없는 나룻배)」(1932) and 「The wanderer(나그네)」(1937) as the standard chsun film. And they circulated that list of the standard chsun films through the mass media. Thus ‘the chsun’ represented in those films could constitute the chsun film which included the ethical and the aesthetic value. They expected ‘the chsun’ to make the chsun film the culture product as well as the major part of the culture in Korea. The ‘rural communities’ were represented as the colonial chsun in those films. That might be the discursive space, supposed as the primitive, poor, backward region. The poverty, rape and murder motives appealed to people’s emotion so that “the locality” as the ideological culture discourse could appropriate the agrarian concrete issues. Thus the ‘chsun film’ discourse in the late 1930’s might not only imagine the relationship between the Japanese empire and the colony through the disparity between the urban and the rural communities, but also make up the ethnic narrative of the colonized.
