Abstract
The 1920s, it was marked as the 'time of children's song' and children's song was a popular genre so that it was frequently referred to in the reader's column of the modem media. These facts bring forward the need of examining the children's songs in the 1920s within the context of the history of Korean modern literature instead of within the limited view of the history of children's literature. Modern children's song, the modern poetic genre, and professional children's song writers were introduced in the 1920s, the era that children's literature was blooming as a result of the rise of children's movement. The reader's column of the media such as Children, a magazine, and Dongailbo, a daily newspaper, played the essential role to achieve those. Among the children's song writers who were newly introduced in the children's literature society include Yoon Suk-Joong, Han Jung-Dong, Lee Won-Soo, Suh Duk-Chool, and Choi Young-Ae, These writers published their works in the children's song columns of the media and had their names up, and they kept producing children's songs throughout their lives. Unlike today, a 'children's literature writer' was regarded with high respect like any other serious literature writers. For example, all the members of Saekdong Association, such as Chung Soon-Cheol, were highly educated people at that time. Encouraged by such social atmosphere, children's song gradually established the model of its genre: the elegiac children's song and the joyful children's song. Children's song with these two distinguishing patterns developed its genre that possessed complex characteristics by mixing the characteristics of two different genres-traditional musical genre and modern poetic genre. This characteristics has been the model of the genre till today. These two distinguishing patterns of children's song were built within the 'Theory of Children's Innocence as Angels' that attempted to express the innocent mind of children. Hence the limits and the meaning of children's song in the 1920s also had their roots in the theory. The children in that epoch would cultivate emotional adaptable power and good nature through elegiac children's songs, but they might also internalize the realities as their fate while they were singing these songs. Likewise, while joyful children's songs brought the children the feeling of freedom and joy, they led the children to be blind to the harsh realities. It is not that children do not have the pain of life. Only, it seems that it can not be logically interpreted. Although the children's song writers in the 1920s sympathized with those children and attempted to get them to have strength and happiness, they did not reach the stage of helping the children to strengthen themselves emotionally and perceptionally in order to overcome their difficulties. This is the limits that the dualized pattern of the children's song genre had in the 1920s.
