이 글은 2000년대 중반부터 2014년 현시점까지의 이태준 연구의 경향을 ‘언어적 전회’의 관점에서 비판적으로 고찰한다. 탈식민주의와 문화연구의 흐름에 견인된 2000년대 중반의 한국근대문학 연구는 ‘문학’을 소여(所與)로 보지 않고 역사적으로 구성된 ‘담론’으로 보는 관점을 취한다. ‘문학’으로부터 ‘담론’으로의 전회라는 방법론상의 자각은, ‘혼종성’과 ‘언어의식’을 해석학적 지평으로 삼아 분석한 이태준 연구들로 실체화되었다. 그러나 이들 연구들은 궁극적으로, 이태준 텍스트의 혼종적 면모를 당대 ‘현실’의 무매개적 반영으로 보거나, 문장론에서 나타나는 ‘문장’ 개념의 전도성을 ‘현실’에 대한 저항으로 보는 한계를 보인다. 이는 ‘문학’ 자체의 역사성을 기술하려고 했던 엄밀한 객관주의 정신이, 자기가 인식한 ‘현실’만이 ‘역사’의 보증을 받는 유일한 버전의 현실임을 강요하는 역사주의로 빠져버렸음을 의미한다. 결국 ‘문학’ 자체의 존재를 담론적으로 정당화하는 역사주의 극복이라는 과제는 아직 완수되지 못한 채로 남는다. 이는 한국근대문학 연구가 ‘역사성’을 회복하기 위해서는 더욱 ‘담론’ 차원에의 집중을 철저히 할 필요성이 있음을 알려준다.
Abstract
This paper critically examines Yi T’aejun studies during the decade from 2004 to 2014 from the vantage point of the Linguistic Turn. Since the mid-2000s, the mainstream of modern Korean literature field has been under considerable influence of Post-colonialism studies and Cultural Studies. Korean literature scholars in the trends regard Literature not as a given but as a historically constructed discourse. The transition from the former to the latter is what I call the strategical turn from the Literature to the Discourse. Yi T’aejun studies from the last decade substantialize this turn in their analyses with the problematique of Hybridity and Language Consciousness. However, the turn remains incomplete as they see an immediate reflection of the Reality from Yi T’aejun texts’ hybridity and passive resistance against the Reality from the perversity of Yi’s theory of “Munjang” [sentence, language, or words]. They originally intended to describe how modern conception of Literature is contingent on particular historical context at the Linguistic Turn. However, they find themselves trapped in, if not unconsciously endorsing, Historicism, which is discursively rendering Literature as a given. Their initial conscious intention to overcome Historicism in literary studies remains unfulfilled as they unconsciously assert their own version of Reality as the only tenable reality on the hermeneutic horizon of the History. Here, students of modern Korean literature must learn the following ironic lesson: that literary studies are allowed to achieve historicity when they thoroughly accomplish the task of the Linguistic Turn and confine themselves strictly to the level of Discourse.
