Abstract
In order to find a way to rethink the history of Korean cinema through the lens of disability, this article appropriates Michel Chion’s frame of ‘deaf cinema’ from a disability perspective and examines Shin Film’s deaf-themed films in the 1960s; Somewhere in This World(Isesang Eodingae, 1962), Deaf Samryong(Beongeori Samryong, 1964) and The Evening Bell(Manjong, 1970). Films produced by Shin Film were related to the production system and commercial film practices of the Korean film industry in the 1960s and aimed at the ‘hearing world’ leaning toward social prejudice against disability. However, it can be said that they are meaningful events in the history of Korean cinema as rare cases of filming the deaf people’s lives and their sign language conversations. In particular, The Evening Bell helps the hearing audience understand that disability is socially constructed by providing a reversed disability experience of being ‘the sign-impaired,’ which is limited in accessibility to the sign language film, even though the film was infiltrated by eugenic ideology in an ableist society. This article presents a case study that takes issue beyond representation of disability, putting the sign language film The Evening Bell and other films around it as stepping stones on.
