성장 서사를 다룬 ‘코다(Children of Deaf Adults)’ 영화의 사운드 양상 고찰: 청각장애영화 <미라클 벨리에>와 <코다>를 중심으로

Abstract

This article examines the sound aspects from the perspective of symbolic representation, focusing on the disabled family where the protagonist’s desires and growth are realized in the two films <The Belier Family> and <CODA> that deal with ‘Coda (Children of Deaf Adults)’. Until now, film analyses targeting Coda or deaf families have mainly focused on the psychological treatment of disabled families to overcome alienation and the need for social communication. On the other hand, there has been no attempt to reflect on the narrative of Coda, the main character in the text, overcoming her internal disability and recovering her identity through growth, from the perspective of music and acoustics. As a result of examining the sound aspects that contain Coda’s growth narrative in the film, it was revealed that sound is not only a symbol that helps Coda grow and relieves the tension of reality, but also promotes the audience’s ability to empathize and supports appropriate scene transitions in a three-dimensional way. The understanding of sound, including music and silence, examined in this paper not only reveals the meaning of fulfillment of Coda’s desires as a young man, but also suggests a method of communication between the hearing and the deaf, and a methodology for implementing narratives, and suggests the necessity and possibility of analyzing sound symbols in Coda’s films.
