Abstract

It can be said that the early 1920’s literature is a second phase in history of Modern literature. ‘Literary Coterie Magazine Movement'(in short Magazine Literature') is the most meaningful sign that reveals the change of literary situation. 'Magazine Literature' tried to make a generation gap positively and accomplished new aesthetic discourse. They separated and differentiated literature from reality as a compensatory sphere. This study focuses on the generic indivergence, especially the indivergence and relationship between novels and essays. Both novels and essays in this period functioned as a private sphere of self-expression of modern individual aesthetic subject. And these two genres combined mutually not only in content but also in form. In relation to these novels and essays, we need point up the travels-mode, because this travels-mode of both novels and essays are assumed to promote maturity of modern literature. In travels-mode, the subject can see both inside and out side of a ‘self’ , so coexist introspective vision and extrospective vision. In case of travels-mode novels borrowing essayistic forms, the ‘vision’ plays an important role as a formalizing device of narrative. By these devices of 'vision' and 'way' of travels-mode, Modern novel could find the modern subject constructing ‘self’ and take social reality surrounding him.
