Abstract

This study inquired into the general aspects of literary criticism in early 1920s from the three viewpoints of three approaches of criticism to define self, a novel theory which brought about the theoretical depth of criticism as a standard of text analysis, and the criticism of “art for art' s sake", one of the main literary theories in early 1920s. First, the approaches to criticisms at that time can be stylized into three types: the criticism in which critics analyze and explain internal principles of works, the criticism in which critics put the same emphasis on a writer and a work by regarding a work as an expression of a writer' personality, and the criticism in which critics as active readers emphasize their own appreciations more than writers and works. Second, the appearance of a novel theory is characterized as one of the criticism in early 1920s, which can help out text analysis. The contemporary writers had the similar understanding of the basic elements of a novel such as characters, events, and sets. However, Kim Dong-in valued the internal completion of texts and Hyun chu tried to observe even the process of creating a literature as a representation of reality. Finally, the criticism of "art for art's sake", the main literary trend in early 1920s shows two different ways. One is that Lee Kwang-su criticized “art for art's sake" for producing too difficult literatures for the public to understand and being based on “a decadent feeling ruinous to the country" . The other is that Sin Sik asserted that the arts which the class of specialist only enjoyed had to be shared with the public as active receptors. These two criticisms led need to reconsider the relationship between the public and the literature.
