Abstract

This article aims at searching for common people’s mentality and their way of self-expression which were not revealed in 1970’s public discourse by looking at Youth Culture and Youth Literature. It is also intended to suggest that a positive study with actual proofs on popular literary texts should be achieved in terms of cultural history or cultural sociology and show a sample study based on this methodology. Youth Culture in 1970’s Korea has been devaluated as a blind imitation of Western Youth Culture and the demoralized manners and customs of young people. The unique styles and manners of some university students were severely criticized by other students and intellectuals on Youth Culture Debate in 1974. But their styles, manners and customs cannot be underestimated because they actively expressed their feeling to be free from social controlling ideology. Their feelings and emotions are fully shown in the novels of Choi Inho who was called a popular icon of 1970s’ youth culture. His young characters in The March of Fools show various actions of their own, like wearing unisex mode style for disturbing the strict gender system, consumption of cultural goods for showing off their knowledge and modern sensibility, and shocking happening like streaking for breaking the stern environment. They represented not only longing for a free and open society like Western Youth Culture but also the unconscious disapproval of the national ideology for a rapid industrialization, the standardized nationalism and populism of dogmatic progressivism. Such an unconsciousness was the sources for which young people could take the leadership in culture and consumption including publication, cinema, literature and so on. The 1970’s Youth Culture also has a significance in that it played a mediative role to disclose many desires and a sense of alienation of the lower class beyond youth’s self- expression.
